When Should You Weigh Chicken Mini Fillets?

During the research for this article, I’ve noticed that chicken calories vary between stores and also between different brands.

While you would think chicken calories would be the same across the board, it can become confusing when you’re trying to work out weights for calorie counting or meal planning. On top of this, some packs show calorie information for cooked weights instead of raw weights.

As a rule, meat should be weighed when it’s raw because pack calories are generally based on a raw weight. Chicken loses weight during the cooking process, so it’s important that if you’re using a cooked chicken weight calorie information that you weigh chicken as per the cooked weight and vice versa.

How Much Weight Do Chicken Mini Fillets Lose When Cooked?

The amount that chicken reduces in weight when it’s cooked, depends on the quality of the chicken and whether it has added water.

Because chicken mini fillets don’t have skin or bone, they have the potential to dry out more than a chicken leg or a whole chicken.

As a general rule, good quality free-range chicken with no added water will reduce in weight by around 25% when it’s cooked, but if it’s allowed to dry out, chicken has the potential to lose up to 40% of the original weight.

How Many Chicken Mini Fillets Are In A Serving?

If you’re meal planning or calorie counting and you need to know how many chicken mini fillets are in a serving, then here’s the information:

The recommended portion size of chicken mini fillets is around 4-5 fillets per person, this is equal to 180g-225g/6.3-7.9oz of raw chicken which will weigh around 135-169g/4.4-6oz when cooked.

If you’re meal planning, then as a rule allow four chicken mini fillets per person for a small portion or five to six mini fillets each for a large portion or if you want leftovers.
