The serving size for Original Cheerios is 1 ½ cups or 39 grams. The serving size for Original Shredded Wheat is 1 ⅓ cups or 60 grams. To keep the comparison fair, I will also do a weight-for-weight comparison of 100 grams.

The first category is calorie content. Whether you are trying to lose weight or want to maintain your weight, the calorie content is important to monitor.

Because of the larger serving size, Shredded Wheat has a higher calorie content than Original Cheerios.

Sodium/salt content is one category that is sneaky. We often pay more attention to the sugar content but salt is another area we need to examine. A diet that is high in sodium/salt is dangerous to the body, especially the heart.

Best for Flavor/Texture

This category is always the toughest to judge because flavor and texture are so subjective but I would have to say the winner is Cheerios.

On their own, both kinds of cereal are rough and dry but Shredded Wheat is exceptionally rough in texture. Flavor-wise, the winner would have to be Cheerios with its added ingredient of sugar.

Pricewise, both kinds of cereal are comparable. A regular-size box of both Cheerios and Shredded Wheat sells for around the same price. The price will vary if you purchase the cereal from a bulk store or if there are in-store promotions or sales.

Both of our contenders in this comparison are good choices. Both are made with whole grains and both contain the necessary protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals we need to be healthy.

Cheerios excel when it comes to a low amount of calories and carbohydrates. Shredded Wheat has a lower sodium/salt content but also has a higher amount of fiber.
