Use this page to help you to calculate the weights and calories of any serving size or portion of pistachios.
The easy-to-use calculator and charts below will help you to calculate both cooking weight conversions and calorie amounts depending on what you need.
Pistachio Calculator
The calculator below will help you to quickly calculate the weight and calories of your portion of pistachios.
This is based on an average unshelled pistachio weight of 0.6g (0.021oz) per kernel.
I have also used the assumption that the average pistachio is equal to 4kcal (as per My FitnessPal).

How Much Does an Unshelled Pistachio Weigh?
I weighed a number of whole pistachios with the shells and found the following:
The average weight of one pistachio with the shell is around 1.25g (0.042oz).
Conversion | Weight of One Average Pistachio |
Grams | 1.2g |
Ounces | 0.04oz |
Kilograms | 0.001kg |
Pounds | 0.003lb |
How Much Does a Shelled Pistachio Weigh?
I weighed a number of whole pistachios without the shell and found the following:
The average weight of one pistachio without the shell is around 0.6g (0.021oz).
Conversion | Weight of One Average Pistachio |
Grams | 0.6g |
Ounces | 0.021oz |
Kilograms | 0.0006kg |
Pounds | 0.001lb |
How Much of a Pistachio’s Weight is it’s Shell?
I did some research and removed the shells from a 200g pack of pistachios and found that the edible part of the pistachio weighed 103g and the shells weighed 97g. From these findings we know that:
The average weight of a pistachio shell is around 0.6g (0.021oz) and accounts for around half of the weight of the whole pistachio.
This means that if you buy a pack of pistachios with the shells on, only about half of the pack is actually edible, and the rest will be discarded.
How Much Does a Cup of pistachios Weigh
I weighed a cup full of pistachios with the shell on and found the following:
A full US cup of pistachios weighs around 125g (4.4oz) and contains around 100 individual (unshelled) pistachios in total.
Half a US cup of pistachios weighs around 63g (2.2oz) and contains around 50 individual pistachios in total.

How Many pistachios are in a Portion?
Although pistachios are a good source of protein, they’re also relatively high in fat and calories so if you’re counting yours, it’s a good idea to know how many are in a portion.
The recommended portion/serving size per portion of pistachios is 1oz/28g. Based on the average pistachio weighing 0.6g, there are around 47 pistachios in a serving.
Pistachio Weight & Calorie Chart
The conversion table below shows more pistachio portions (with and without the shell) to help you quickly work out the weight and calories for your portion.
This chart is based on the assumption that an average pistachio kernel weighs 0.6g (oz) and that pistachios of this size contain around 4 calories. Because pistachios are a natural product, some weigh more and some weigh less than the average amount.

Are Shelled or Unshelled Pistachios Better Value?
Based on current supermarket prices, I found that it’s actually better value to buy pistachio kernels ready shelled rather than buying them with the shells on.
This is based on an unshelled pack costing just under 15% less than a pack of ready shelled kernels which are also easier to eat and use.
