Penne Pasta Before & After Cooking Weights

When penne pasta is cooked, it absorbs the water it’s cooked in and increases in weight by an average of around 2.25 times the original dry pasta weight.

Based on this information, we can estimate the average before and average cooking weights of penne pasta and convert cooked weights back to the original dry weight, which can be helpful for recipes and calorie counting.

Penne Pasta Serving Sizes

Recommended serving sizes for penne pasta vary between brands, and there’s also conflicting information on how much pasta you should have per serving.

Many packs recommend a serving of 56g of dried pasta, whereas some recommend 75g or more. So I cooked and weighed various servings of pasta to get a weight for various portions to find out how much pasta you get per serving.

I found that a 56g serving of dry penne pasta is small and probably too small for most people, whereas 100g of dry pasta will produce a larger serving.

I’ve collected data from several pasta brands to get an average calorie value that works for most types of pasta.

The average amount of calories in white penne pasta is 357kcal per 100g/3.5oz, and whole-grain (brown) pasta contains an average of 321kcal per 100g/3.5oz.
