Bread is one of the UK’s most bought food products, but how many slices you get per loaf is not something we generally think about.
It is helpful to know how many slices of bread there are in a loaf when you’re calorie counting if you need to calculate the weight per slice, or to work out how many slices you need to feed a crowd.
In this article, I’ve researched and put together a comprehensive list (in charts) of the UK’s most popular bread brand slice numbers per loaf, along with average slice numbers and how many slices you get from a homemade loaf.
Generally, a large 800g shop-bought medium sliced loaf has 20 slices per loaf, and a thick sliced loaf will contain 16-18 slices per loaf.
This figure does vary, especially for specialty loaves, so read on to get the exact information you need for your bread type and size.

How Many Slices are in an Average Loaf of Bread?
If you need to know the average number of slices for a generic loaf of bread, the charts below will help you work out what you need (depending on the loaf size and slice thickness).
Bread is typically sold in two main loaf sizes, although they can vary depending on the brand or bread type, so I’ve split the sizes into the two most-common weights found in shops and supermarkets to keep things simple.
If you need to know slice numbers for a specific brand, skip to the next section.

How Many Slices of Bread are in a Homemade Loaf?
When you slice up homemade bread, unless you have the knack of cutting perfect slices, they will generally be thicker than shop-bought sliced loaves, which are cut by machine.
As a general rule, when sliced by hand, a large (2lb) loaf will cut into around 14-16 thick slices per loaf, and a small (1lb) loaf will slice into about ten slices per loaf.

How Many Servings Are in a Loaf of Bread?
I’ve researched numerous recommended bread servings from brand bread nutrition labels to get an answer on how much bread is classed as a serving.
The serving size for most shop-bought bread is two slices because it’s generally used as sandwich bread. The exception to this rule is thick-sliced higher-calorie bread such as a thick seeded bloomer, in which case, the recommended serving is one slice.
The larger the loaf and the thicker the slice is, the more calories it will contain; for more information on how many calories are in a slice of bread, take a look at the article below:
