Sausages come in a variety of sizes and it can sometimes be difficult to work out how much they weigh for recipes or to calculate calories.
In this article, I’ve done lots of research into sausage weights before and after cooking along with weight variations between brands so I can give you the most accurate information possible.
The quick answer is; the average uncooked thick (high meat content) sausage weighs around 67g (2.4oz), whereas a supermarket brand sausage weighs around 57g (2oz). A thinner chipolata sausage weighs around 31g (1.1oz).
Obviously, this figure depends on the brand and style of the sausage, which I’ll cover in more detail throughout this article.
Read on to find out more weights of various types of sausages, both cooked and uncooked, along with easy-to-follow charts to help you calculate weights and calories correctly.
If you’re looking for specific sausage brand weights you might like to use the table of contents below to find what you’re looking for:

Sausage Weights and Calories by Brand
The tables below show weights and calories of popular sausage brands and supermarket-own brands in grams, kilograms, ounces, and pounds to help you convert the weights of your favorite sausages.
To avoid one huge table and to make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for, I’ve split the brands into categories of specific brands and supermarket brands (in alphabetical order).
All figures are rounded up or down to the nearest whole number or decimal point and weights are based on raw sausage weights.
Calorie figures are generally based on sausages that have been grilled as per pack instructions unless stated otherwise.

How Much do Sausages Weigh Before and After Cooking?
Working out weights and calories for some food types and especially meat can be confusing.
This is because it’s not always clear whether you should use the cooked or uncooked weight and is there even a difference?
With sausages, there is a difference between the cooked and uncooked weights because they lose fat as they cook which means sausages weigh less when they’re cooked, especially if they have a high-meat/high-fat content.
How Much Weight Does a Sausage Lose When Cooked?
I have done testing with some different sausage types to see how much weight they lose before and after cooking and here’s what I found;
High meat content (90%) gluten-free sausages lost the most weight during cooking (almost 17g), whereas a lower meat content sausage (70%meat) containing rusk lost less weight (around 10g).
Read on to find out more about why this happens and the differences per sausage type.
High Quality/High Meat Content Sausages
Most supermarkets stock a higher quality range of sausages such as ‘Finest’ which tend to be very high meat content sausages and the only other ingredients are herbs, spices, and seasoning.
In most cases, these types of sausages are usually advertised as gluten-free because they don’t contain any rusk which is similar to breadcrumbs.
As well as meat, sausages will also contain a certain amount of fat to produce extra flavor. This fat renders down during cooking meaning a sausage with a higher meat/fat content tends to lose more weight as it cooks.

Lower Meat Content Sausages
Lower quality sausages tend to contain less meat and are instead bulked out with rusk.
Although they’re not necessarily lower in fat, the rusk in sausage with a lower meat content helps to retain and soak up more fat and juices which come out of the meat during cooking meaning they don’t lose as much weight.

Should You Use Cooked or Uncooked Sausages to Work Out Weights and Calories?
This can be a tricky question, but the most accurate way to work out the correct figures is to use the cooked calorie amount if available on the pack.
Pack information does vary and although the calorie information they give is usually based on the cooked weight, although the overall pack weight will be based on the uncooked contents ‘as sold’.
In most cases, the pack will give you the correct information, but if in doubt you can base calories on the raw amount, and if you want to be very specific you can deduct the 10-20g which they lose during cooking.
How Many Sausages are in a Portion?
The serving guidance for most packs of sausages is two sausages per portion for a thick 50-70g sausage (raw weight).
Chipolata serving sizes are three or four sausages as they’re around half the size of a thicker style sausage and lower in calories.
The nutrition information label will usually state the recommended serving amount along with the calories per serving.
More Sausage Weight FAQ’s
A high-quality sausage with over 90% meat content will weigh around 0.15 lb, which means there are around 7 average-sized sausages in a pound. A thinner chipolata-style sausage weighs around 0.07 lb each.
The average good quality sausage (10cm long) weighs around 0.067kg, which means there are around 15 sausages of this size in a kilogram. The average thin chipolata sausage weighs around 0.030kg each meaning there would be around 33 chipolatas in a kilogram.
Equipment and Information Used for This Article
I used precision scales that weigh to 0.01 of a gram which is regularly calibrated with a 100g weight. For more information see my recommended weighing scales here.
To make sure the information in this article is accurate, I researched and cross-referenced various sources (as well as original research) to obtain the correct weights and calories.
